A 6–3 center–forward Hugo began his tremendous long basketball career right away after his graduation from New York School for the Deaf (Fanwood). An all–around player on both ends of the court and five–time All–star selection Hugo and his team had reached the EAAD finals nine times, winning six (GTAC and Union League three each). He bested all scorers with 24 points in the 1952 EAAD finale as he led his celebrated GTAC team to a 67–61 victory over Pittsburgh and earned him an All–star honor. Then he carried GTAC to the AAAD finals and was selected to the National team All–stars. His 18 points helped GTAC defeat Newark 66–64 in the 1954 EAAD final. At the 1956 classic he scored the tournament–high 71 points in three games in addition to 27 big ones in the championship game which saw his GTAC trounce New Kensington of Pittsburgh 76–67. A month later, he pumped 65 points in three games at the AAAD tournament and GTAC held on 91–90 win over Little Rock for the championship, and earned him an All–star selection.
